Its homeland is the geography between France and Germany in Central and Southern Europe, Northern Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan in Western and Central Asia, and Morocco in Northwest Africa. It is widespread in Europe and Eastern Mediterranean countries. In Turkey, it is grown in Tokat, Zile, Niksar, Amasya, Çorum and Mardin.
It is used in bakery products to add scent and flavor.
Usage Recommendations: Its dried fruits are used as spices (Mahlep). It gives a unique and pleasant smell especially to pastries. It is especially added to cakes, buns and cookies. It is used in the liqueur industry. The mahaleb tree, its branches and bark have a pleasant smell due to the coumarin it contains. For this reason, in the past, tobacco smoking sticks were made from the branches of the mahaleb tree. Mahlep is also used in the perfumery industry and its oil is used in the paint industry.
